Ananse & The Chocolate Redemption
Posted by Midunu Limited on
A tale as rich as chocolate, as clever as Ananse...
The short rains had passed, leaving the earth fresh and fragrant, the scent of damp cocoa husks and wood smoke curling through the air. The villagers of Midunu were preparing for the Feast of Gratitude, an annual celebration where they shared their bounty and honored the hands that had nurtured the land. Drinking bowls of classic milk drinking chocolate were passed around, their steam curling into the cool air, warming hands and hearts alike.
Ananse lurked on the fringes of the village square, watching. He had spent months scheming, tricking, and taking—always taking. But tonight, something stirred within him. The laughter of children playing near the cocoa trees, the warmth of a village elder’s voice as she stirred a pot of fragrant light soup simmering with garden eggs and smoked fish, the aroma of freshly toasted coconut flakes being sprinkled into caramel to make kube cake—it was different from before. There was no hunger for trickery, only a strange, unfamiliar yearning.
The head chocolatier of Midunu stood before the crowd, lifting a wooden tray filled with the season’s finest chocolates: Rum Coconut truffles, Ras el Hanout chocolates, and East African Chai bonbons.
"Tonight, we honor those who have given, those who have grown, and those who have shared," she said. "For what is chocolate, if not a gift to be enjoyed together?"
Ananse swallowed hard. Could he—would he—be a part of this? Slowly, he crept toward the feast, his many legs hesitant. He reached out, plucking a single West African 5 Spice truffle, but this time, he did not run. Instead, he turned and—tentatively—held it out to a child nearby.
The child beamed and broke the chocolate in half, handing a piece back to him.
The first bite melted on his tongue, rich with spice and warmth, and for the first time in a long while, Ananse did not feel like a trickster. He felt like a guest.
Would this be the start of a new Ananse? Well… that is a story for another time.
